History
Viva was launched at Palmer Scott's Yard at the north end of New Bedford, Massachusetts on the Acusnet River in 1939.
She was designed by Ben T.
Dobson and represents the cutting edge of yacht design just prior to the beginning of World War II.
Built of old growth mahogany on oak frames with solid teak decks and teak interior Viva is a perfect example of a fine yacht of the era.
She was originally built for Patrick Sweeny and named CINDY III.
The boat was a regular on the waters around the Cape and Vineyard.
The story goes that she was chartered Hendon Chubb (of Chubb insurance) who also owned the America's Cup 12m boat, Resolute.
Over the years Viva has had several other names including Cindy III, Pilgrim, Sea Nymph, Marauder, and now Viva.
Interestingly, Viva was owned by the Maine Maritime Academy for a while and sold to owner when we bought her.
He was originally from Belfast and the boats hailing port was Belfast even though she berthed in Anacock, Virginia.
So in some way Viva has returned home.
Accommodations
From the cockpit forward: Galley with 4 burner Shipmate stove/oven to port, freezer/fridge to starboard with counter space under bridge deck and next to stove, deep sailing sink.
Main salon with pilot berth to starboard, two setee berths with port converting to a double, mahogany slats for ceiling on sides, Luke soapstone wood stove to starboard.
Head and shower to port, hanging locker to starboard.
Forward stateroom, full width with skylight, double bed to port, single to starboard with door going forward to forecastle with two Vee berths(forecastle can also be entered from cabin top hatch).
Sails and Rigging
Full inventory of cruising sails from drifter and spinnakers to #1 genoa,all in good condition as well as mainsail.
All standing rigging in excellent condition with Norseman fittings.
Double head stay for 2 hanked on sail combinations.
Sitka spruce mast, double spreaders and jumper strut.
Electronics
Ritchie compass, Datamarine depth sounder, autopilot, VHF radio, Magellan GPS, CD, AM FM radio and cassette player.
Electrical 12 volt system with starting bank and two house banks (new batteries), one twelve volt invertor.
Ground tackle Two Danforth anchors with 30 ' chain and approx. 300' rode, manual windlass.
Equipment Exceeds all required US Coast Guard safety specifications.
